Well, after 2 months, I finally finished this
book. I am kind of proud because it contains more that 450 pages so it was quite
difficult for me to finish it and to manage with my school activities. Now,
here we are. I am going to explain little bit more about the review of this
book. This book is actually very interesting to read. Overall, it is all about the biography of
Elon Musk and every ups and downs that happened behind his success in leading
futuristic technology companies. His big interest in technology and science has turned him into one of the greatest entrepreneurs and inventors in
futuristic technology like automotive, renewable energy and space travel. Many
of his innovations seemed to be impossible in the beginning. However, Elon Musk
is capable of turning innovations from scientific fictions movie into real
life. This book describes Elon Musk has never been driven by money or any
commercial inclination. He appears to have been driven to
show that his beliefs about business and scientifically technology is going to
change the world.
He started his own venture when he was 22
years old. The company was first called, Zip2.The company idea was about
providing viable internet business. His next venture was X.com, an online
banking company. Later on, X.com merged with Confinity, a financial start-up
founded by Peter Thiel. Both companies were formed to Paypal, which later on
was acquired by Ebay. Then his innovation took place in space travel. He
believes humans are supposed to be multiplanetary creature. With his next
venture, SpaceX, he was ready to explore space life by improving rocket
technology. He is always up to electric cars and solar energy. Therefore, he
was the biggest investor in the company that produced and electric cars. He
became Tesla’s chairman in 2004. Elon Musk and his cousins, Lyndon Rive and
Peter Rives designed a commercial solar panels company. In 2012, SolarCity had
become the largest solar panels installer in USA. His hatred of government’s plan to make fast train
that cost more than 60 billion US dollar, led him to Releases sketch and concept
of his next venture, Hyperloop. It’s a new mode of transportation, high-speed rail,
which he claims faster than airplane.
From this book, aside from my business
vocabulary in English is increasing, I have learned a lot about how business
works. This book explains me
about business in a broader concept, starting from the competitive vibes
about hi-tech companies in Sillicon Valley to how Tesla was almost acquired by
Google because it faced bankruptcy. From this book, I know the reason behind
why SpaceX remains as private company and why Tesla and SolarCity remain being
public company. Being public means a company will get more investors from
government or any other investors. However, it means that the company is being
monitored by law as a target to be responsible of few hundred shares. The way
Elon Musk saved Tesla by motivating and challenging his employees to expand
their capability, and the way he turned people who ridiculed his idea about
SpaceX, inspires me. Elon Musk is an extraordinary CEO. In his world,
everything has to be fast. He does not know what slow is. He rather takes over
his employee’s work, than waiting couple days for them to finish. His employees
number in his companies rapidly changes. Sometimes, he is willing to take audacious step
to fire those who cannot fulfil his wishes. He might not be very good in human relation,
but his way of thinking can save his companies. He makes right decision in
almost every problem that his companies encounter. He knows what to do if
something goes wrong. He is capable in calculating accurately every cost his
company would spend on something. As we all know, businesses have always been
about lowering production cost. On the other hand, he is capable of searching
lots of talented engineers for his venture. He interviewed Therefore, his
company mostly starts everything from scratch and manufacture its sources independently.
I like the fact that all of Musk’s companies
are integrated to each other. Tesla makes battery packs SolarCity can sell to
its costumer. SolarCity supplies Tesla’s charging stations with making solar
panels, helping Tesla to provide free recharging energy to its costumer. SpaceX
and Tesla are helping each other in designing prototypes or new software and
technology. I think this is one of the reason behind his success. In my
opinion, this book is inspiring. Elon Musk is an influencer of world’s innovation.
Ashlee Vence provides lots of story that have not been told in any other media before.
He depicts the insights about how technology runs along together with world’s
most important entrepreneur.
